Crammed full of rolled oats, desiccated coconut, cashew nuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, golden linseeds, chopped almonds, walnuts and hazelnuts, the new gluten-free granola from Lizi’s is no ordinary cereal. Because while we all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, not all breakfast foods are created equal – and they’re certainly not all that healthy either.
Thankfully, the team at Lizi’s know a lot about what goes into making a good slow-energy-release breakfast. Founded by Dr Mick Shaw and his wife, Lizi, the company’s concern for a low-glycemic diet means that the natural sugars of their granola are released slowly, blood sugar levels don’t increase too rapidly, and in theory, you’ll keep going and feel fuller for longer.
The combination of so many superfoods certainly makes for a worthy breakfast, although taste-wise it seems far more focused on being nutritious than delicious. Fructose and black treacle do go some way to sweeten the savoury flavours, but such a bird feed mix of equally-sized oats, nuts and seeds can’t be said to form the basis of the most tempting breakfast – however virtuous. But that’s not to be said it can’t be helped. Topped with flavoured yoghurt, fresh or dried fruits, Lizi’s Gluten Free Granola has all the taste and crave-inducing crunch of any good granola – it just depends whether you’re willing to spend on top of the (already higher than average) £4.50 getting there.
Having already picked up a Great Taste Gold Award for their jumbo oat, coconut and pecan granola, it’s great to see Lizi’s introduce a gluten-free option to the range and while I don’t think this granola will win any prizes on taste, at least now everyone really can start their day the healthy way.
